FAQ | Press Copper Tees and Reducing Tees

Everything you need to know about SurePress Tee (Press Copper Tee)

What is a copper press tee used for?

A copper press tee is a T-shaped fitting that splits or combines flow in a copper piping system. It has three outlets (typically two in-line and one branch at 90°) all with press connections. Plumbers use a press tee to add a branch line or connect three copper pipes together without soldering. For example, you’d install a SurePress tee to tie a new supply line into a main line or to create a branch for a fixture. It performs the same function as a traditional copper tee, but uses press technology for quicker, safer installation.

How do you install a SurePress press tee?

Installing a SurePress tee is straightforward. Cut and prep (debur) the main copper pipe where the tee will insert. Insert the tee’s straight-through outlets onto the cut main pipe ends and the branch outlet onto the branch pipe. Ensure each pipe is fully seated in the fitting – you can mark insertion depth on each pipe to verify. Then use the press tool with the correct size jaws to crimp each of the three connections. You can press them in any order (typically one run end, then the other run end, then the branch). After pressing, all three joints are permanently sealed. The SurePress tee has indicator windows on each outlet, so you’ll see green in all three when it’s been pressed correctly, giving a quick visual check that every connection on the tee is crimped.

Do SurePress tees come in reducing sizes?

Yes. In addition to standard straight tees (where all three outlets are the same diameter), SurePress offers reducing tee fittings. These have one or more outlets of a smaller size – for instance a 1″ x 1″ x ¾″ tee, or ¾″ x ½″ x ¾″, etc. Such combinations allow you to branch off in a smaller size without needing separate reducers. The product line includes common reductions (referencing typical competitor sizing, SurePress tees mirror those options) quickfitting.com . When selecting a tee, you can choose the exact configuration needed (each outlet size is usually indicated in the product name). This makes it easy to design plumbing layouts efficiently, as you can pick a single fitting to both split the line and change size.

Will a press tee restrict flow compared to other fittings?

A SurePress tee has the same interior dimensions as an equivalent copper solder tee, so it doesn’t introduce abnormal restriction. The branch flow will be determined by its pipe size. As with any tee, there is a change in direction for the branch, but the pressing mechanism doesn’t add any obstruction internally. In fact, SurePress tees are full-flow designs: the outlets’ IDs correspond to copper pipe standards. You can expect the same performance in terms of flow rate and pressure drop as you would with a traditional tee of the same size. Additionally, by using a single tee fitting (as opposed to multiple fittings), you minimize extra elbows or junctions, which helps maintain good flow characteristics in the system.
