FAQ | Copper Press Caps

Everything you need to know about copper press caps and copper end caps.

What is a press cap used for?

A press cap seals off the end of a copper pipe. It’s used to permanently (or temporarily) cap a line without solder. This is useful for pressure-testing or when ending a plumbing line in a system, allowing for future expansion.

How do you install a press cap?

Installing is simple: you press it onto the cleaned end of a copper tube and crimp it with a press tool. The internal O-ring creates a watertight seal, effectively blocking the flow at that pipe end.

Can a press cap handle high pressure?

Yes. Like other SurePress fittings, press caps are rated for up to 300 psi quickfitting.com , which means they can safely be used for pressure testing new lines or permanently sealing off a live line in commercial applications. They are just as reliable as soldered caps, but much faster to install.

When would a plumber use a press cap?

Common scenarios include capping pipes during renovations, temporarily sealing a line while reconfiguring plumbing, or permanently capping a branch that might be extended later. In commercial installs, they save time when you need to quickly cap and move on, without waiting for cool-down as with solder.

Is a press cap removable or reusable?

No. once a press cap is crimped on, it creates a permanent seal. If you need to reopen that line, you’d cut the cap off or use a press union ahead of time for disassembly. Press caps are considered one-time use fittings, similar to how soldered caps must be cut off if the line is reopened.
