FAQ | 90-Degree Copper Press Elbow

Everything you need to know about 90 degree copper press elbow fittings.

What is a 90-degree copper press elbow used for?

A 90° copper press elbow allows you to turn a copper pipe run by 90 degrees (a right-angle turn) without soldering. It’s one of the most common fittings in plumbing, used for corners and changes in direction. A SurePress 90° elbow has press connectors on both ends, so you can quickly crimp it onto the pipes to create a sharp turn in water lines, heating lines, etc. It serves the same purpose as a standard elbow but utilizes press technology to save installation time.

How do I install a SurePress 90° elbow?

To install, insert the two pipe ends into the elbow’s sockets, making sure they are fully seated. Because it’s a right angle, you’ll position the pipes in the exact orientation needed for the turn (double-check alignment before pressing). Then attach your press tool around one end of the elbow and activate it to crimp that side; repeat on the other side. Each press end will seal the O-ring onto the pipe, forming a leak-tight joint. The entire operation takes only a few seconds per side. Once both ends are pressed, the 90° elbow is securely in place. Remember that after pressing, the elbow is fixed – if you need to adjust the angle or orientation, you should do so before pressing or re-cut and re-press if necessary, rather than force it.

Are press elbows as reliable as soldered elbows?

Yes – a properly pressed elbow is extremely reliable. SurePress 90° elbows are engineered to meet the same standards as traditional fittings. The pressed connections are rated to the same pressure (up to 300 psi for water) and temperature ranges as soldered joints. The joint’s strength comes from the mechanical crimp and the compression of the seal ring, which together create a permanent connection. In the field, press elbows have proven to hold up in both residential and commercial plumbing systems under vibration and thermal expansion, comparable to soldered elbows. As long as the press procedure is done correctly (pipe fully inserted, tool properly placed, etc.), the elbow will not leak or pull apart – it becomes a solid part of the copper system.

What are the benefits of using a SurePress 90° elbow?

The primary benefits are speed and safety. You can install a SurePress elbow in a fraction of the time it takes to solder – there’s no flux, no heating, and no cooldown period. This can cut labor time significantly, especially if a job has many elbows. It’s also safer in tight or finished spaces since there’s no open flame risk to nearby structure. Additionally, SurePress elbows have the green visual indicator bands, so after crimping you get immediate confirmation that the joint is pressed and sealed (a quick glance ensures no elbow was left un-pressed before you pressurize the system). Finally, because the inside diameter of the SurePress elbow matches copper tube standards, you maintain full flow through the turn, just as you would with a soldered elbow – there’s no internal obstruction, ensuring the performance of the system isn’t compromised.
